Superman was forced to use everything he had to defeat the villain after Doomsday took out the whole Justice League in mere minutes and ran right for Metropolis' heavily populated streets. Because of this, he destroyed world after world until he landed on Earth. Doomsday, who had his first appearance in 1992, is a gargantuan monster who was genetically-engineered from the depths of a prehistoric Krypton he was given only feelings of hate and a desire for destruction. The death was basically an act of sacrifice to stop Doomsday from destroying Metropolis and Earth in general. Though it began as a joke, The Death of Superman's plot was so pivotal that it was recently reimagined with Lois Lane in the starring role, and has been made into films, both as an animated movie, and as an inspiration to the plots of the recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceand Justice League live-action movies. Jerry Ordway jokingly suggested they "just kill 'im!" And DC wound up doing just that.

In order to have the wedding in the comics and the wedding in the television series match up for peak marketing, the team behind Superman had to find a big event to replace the wedding within the comics. The issue, since then becoming quite iconic, was actually an idea to postpone Lois Lane and Clark Kent's wedding in reaction to a Superman television series that was in the works that largely focused on the couple. In 1992, DC Comics famously killed Superman in the riveting Superman #75, which portrayed his death inflicted by Doomsday through stunning single-panel pages.
And one thing that might get you on board - there's a possibility that with a whole line dedicated to the grimdark they'll feel less of a need to have it in all their other lines, meaning lighter, more uplifting stories might appear more easily elsewhere now.Fans may not know Superman died in order to do what everyone desires most: cancel plans. I think one line focused on grimdark stories is okay since there's other lines offering other things. And of course there's still the main titles on top of it too.
Man and Superman was uplifting earlier this year, Year One doesn't seem like it'll go grimdark judging by the first issue (I mean it's Miller so I can't rule it out, but so far so good), and neither are aimed at kids (and I'd argue some of the Kids and Teens stuff feels more like it could be aimed as more family friendly than entirely at kids ). A modern take on something like Lois Lane becoming the hero of Krypton or a Justice League whose founders were Supergirl, John Stewart, Jessie Quick, Misterr Miracle, Big Barda, and Hawkman instead of the classic Big 7 could be Elseworlds that were interesting and had heroic conflict without being dark dystopian versions of the DCU. I don't object to darker Elseworlds as much as I object to the line being dedicated to just those. Since infinite Crisis they've been promising us to cut back on the girimdark stuff, but launch things like this. For me I just want something a little more uplifting that isn't aimed entirely at kids.
